John and Margaret

NYPL Digital Collection, 1873 map of Monmouth County, NJ.

For my first post of 2017, I am following the family of my 5th-great-grandmother, Margaret Truax Smith. Margaret (possibly born Alice Margaret Truax) was born in Monmouth County, New Jersey in February 1757. Her parents, my 6th-great-grandparents, were John Truax and Margaret Mount.

John Truax was born in August 1727. He was baptized on 27 August 1727 in the Dutch Reformed Church of Freehold and Middletown, Monmouth County, New Jersey. His parents were John Truax and Sytje Van Kirk.

John and Margaret were married in Monmouth County, New Jersey on 8 November 1743. They had at least the following children:
- David Truax, 1756 in New Jersey, died 11 February 1855 in Preble County, Ohio
- Margaret Truax, Feb 1757-1844 in Gibson County, Indiana
- Isaac Truax, 1761-1851
- John Truax, born 1770 in Loudoun County, Virginia, died about 1813/1814 in Adair County, Kentucky

John and Margaret moved from New Jersey to Loudoun County, Virginia. I need to visit the Loudoun County Court to see if there are early land records for John Truax in the county. He is listed as a tithable in Loudoun County in 1773, living in Shelburne Parish. He was appointed as surveyor in 1782. Until I check for available records in Loudoun County, I do not have more to add on John or Margaret Truax.

David Truax served in the Loudoun County militia during the Revolutionary War, so I will look next at his pension file before moving back a generation on the Truax line.

The Truax family has a fascinating story, arriving in New York in 1624 from Amsterdam. The Amsterdam Archives recently made their records freely available and I was able to find marriage records for Philippe Du Trieux in Amsterdam in 1615 and 1621. I will share these later in the week.
