Another connection in the Civil War pension file of Thomas Thornhill

The Civil War pension file of Thomas Thornhill continues to yield family connections. The file contained an affidavit from J. W. Cox. I was not certain about the link to the family, other than this Mr. Cox served in the same company as Thomas during the war.

Joseph Wesley Cox married Margaret Adaline Hickey on 2 June 1858 in Jefferson County, Tennessee. Margaret was a younger sister of Benjamin Franklin Hickey and Sarah Hickey (my 4th-great-grandmother; mother of Mary Catherine Green Jones).

His service record on Fold3 provides his age, height, hair and eye color and complexion details.

Joseph Wesley Cox served in Company C, 1st Tennessee Cavalry with Thomas W. Thornhill, his brother Joseph Marion Thornhill, Benjamin Hickey and my 3rd-great-grandfather Joseph Jones. I think I need to view the Civil War pension files of Benjamin Hickey and Wesley Cox to see if there are more affidavits of support from Joseph and others in the extended family.

It is curious to see the file of Thomas Thornhill included a request from the Bureau of Pensions to the Adjutant General asking for the service records showing presence or absence from service for [Joseph] Marion Thornhill, J. W. Cox, and Joseph Jones, all of Company C.

This did not stop Thomas Thornhill from getting a pension. It does show there was quite a family connection among these men from Jefferson County. Joseph Jones clearly deserted for a time during the war and joined with Captain John Thornhill. Perhaps Wesley Cox did the same.
