Sunday's Obituary - Alvin Read

Most of my posts have focused on the lines on my Dad's side of the family. My great-grandfather on my Mom's side of the family was Alvin Read. He was born in Glasgow, Barren County, Kentucky on 22 May 1897, and died in Benton Harbor, Berrien County, Michigan on 23 April 1966. A copy of his obituary from the Benton Harbor News-Palladium is below:

Alvin married my great-grandmother, Elizabeth Lois Whitley, on 8 February 1919 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Both were from Kentucky. The marriage did not last, and Alvin moved to Michigan.

His parents were Charles "Charlie" Read and Mary Alice Cain. I'll have more on them in a separate post. Mary Alice is one of my biggest brick walls. I have not been able to find the names of her parents.

Alvin was the 2nd of 10 children born to Charlie and Mary Alice.

His World War I Draft Card from 5 Jun 1918 is below. This is a nice find, showing his signature, and that he had blue eyes and brown hair.
Alvin and Lois had two children, my grandfather, Leo Morris Read, and Charles Clifton Read (who died a few days after birth in November 1921).

I am interested to find Alvin in the 1940 US Census when it comes out in a few months.
